Spay/Neuter

About sterilization (the descriptions on this page are for spay/neuter surgery)

Both spaying and neutering surgery will be day (out-patient) surgeries in our hospital. The device we use is OLYMPUS high frequency generator (ESG-400) , which reduces the risk for hemorrhage and leaves minimum suture in abdomen. Normally, the scar from spay surgery is about the size of the width of little finger although the situation varies in some cats.

The number of spay surgeries

The number of spay surgeries performed in our hospital in 2019: 818 cases

Pros of spaying/neutering surgery
  • Avoiding unwanted pregnancy.
  • Releasing stress of your cat/dog with drive to mate.
  • Prevention of diseases of the uterus, testis, mammary gland, prostate gland and other hormone disease.
  • Cats and dogs tend to be more gentle and less aggressive.
Cons of spaying/neutering surgery
  • Risk of anesthesia and surgery itself
➡We ensure safety by conducting preoperative tests and by closely monitoring during surgery.
  • Overweight after surgery
➡It can be prevented by controlling diet with appropriate food.
The appropriate weight for spay/neuter (age of the months)

We consider that the appropriate months are 5 to 6 months old. It is learned that the risk of mammary glad can be reduced by spaying/neutering before the first mating period comes. It is recommended to have your pet undergo spay/neuter surgery at younger age to avoid physical burden.

What to expect and need to be done for surgery

  1. Appointment
Surgery for spay/neuter needs to be scheduled beforehand. It is better to have a consultation beforehand but it can also be booked. You can make an appointment and schedule for surgery a month prior.

    * Please provide us below information beforehand for smooth scheduling. There will be some instructions to be followed so please take some notes.

    Pet owner information:
Name, phone number, preferred date and such

    Information on your dogs/cats:
Name, visiting history, gender, living environment, age, weight, presence of current conditions, presence of testes, whether in mating period or not, the last menstrual period and such

  2. Meal on the day before surgery
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Please do not feed after evening meal (by 22:00) on the day before and please clean up the leftover.

  3. Meal on the day of surgery
Please choose either 1. fast through the morning or 2. liquid food. Water intake is not restricted in either option. Please make sure to let us know if any food is given as there is a risk for a serious condition under anesthesia.

    1. Fasting:
Please bring your pet with empty stomach without breakfast.

    2. Liquid food: 1,252 Yen (liquid food + syringe)
This is given by 8:00 AM on the day of surgery. The recovery from surgery is faster with shorter fasting hours. Please take this option into consideration as liquid food can also reduce the risk for vomiting under general anesthesia. If you wish this option, please let us know upon making an appointment for surgery and pick it up by the day before surgery. When it is left, it can be given after surgery. The other details on how to give and such will be explained when you pick it up.

  4. Visit on the day of surgery
Please bring your pet between 9:30 – 10:30 AM. You can leave your pet with us after signing the informed consent. You can go home at this point.

  5. Examination before surgery
Blood test is performed to check the tolerance for anesthesia (anemia, hepatic/renal function will be checked). Please understand that the surgery can be postponed depending on its result and it is informed.

  6. Surgery
Surgery is performed between 12:00 – 16:00 when no issues are found in the examination.

  7. After surgery
It is not informed when there are no issues.

  8. Discharge
Please pick up your pet between 16:00 – 18:00 PM when no admission is required. Please pay at discharge. Instructions after surgery are given by the veterinarian. This will be basically a day procedure but overnight stay service is also available if it is wished. In that case, your pet can be picked up in the morning or in the afternoon following date. However, please note that this service is not available when the hospital is closed on following date.

  9. Checking on the cut
Please have your pet rest for a week after surgery. The cut will be checked a week later. For dogs, suture removal is also performed. Till then please avoid any heavy exercise or bating. You can walk your dog briefly.

For any other questions, feel free to contact us.
